22-year-old crypto burglar and Minecraft friends caught in $245M robbery

Introducing the Architect: Singaporean Star and Minecraft Wizard

The mastermind of an extensive cybercrime syndicate has confessed in the US after aiding in the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency. Malone Lam, 22, a citizen of Singapore residing in Miami, was the genius behind the scheme to pilfer cryptocurrency from affluent individuals between October 2023 and May 2025. Initially arriving in the US in 2023, he encountered two of the gang’s founding members – Jeandiel Serrano and Veer Chetal – during online Minecraft sessions. Indeed, the chap’s talents extend far beyond crafting pixelated fortresses.

Lam’s Contribution: The Data Hunter and Alert Provocateur

Lam undertook multiple roles within the team, but court documents identify him as the primary individual for selecting victims and providing social engineering assistance. He was responsible for acquiring databases filled with information about wealthy individuals possessing cryptocurrency, directing his associates to target them. He would also dispatch account access alerts to victims, leading them to believe their accounts were under attack. A cunning fellow, he was.

Shady Transactions: Laundering Like a Virtuoso

Our man also leveraged his expertise to launder the stolen funds through exchanges that, according to court filings, weren’t particularly strict about KYC protocols. Meanwhile, other gang members conducted social engineering phone calls, masquerading as representatives from Google, Yahoo, Coinbase, Gemini (the cryptocurrency entity, not the AI application), and various online services. Their objective? Persuading victims to surrender personal information and “access codes” to plunder their accounts.

Thefts, Hardware Wallets, and Breaking and Entering

Upon gaining access, Lam’s team would search for cryptocurrency accounts, seed phrases, and passwords to steal the victims’ assets. Generally, their social engineering tactics did the trick, but in one case where a victim secured their assets in a hardware wallet, Lam’s group enlisted Marlon Ferro to physically break into a residence and seize it. Now that’s commitment to the mission!

The Major Crypto Heist: Millions Disappeared

Over the span of nearly two years, Lam’s crew stole hundreds of millions in cryptocurrency. Individual thefts varied from approximately $800,000 to staggering tens of millions, with one unfortunate individual losing over $245 million, according to court documents. With at least 12 members involved, this crew knew how to flaunt their ill-gotten gains.

Living Large: Partying Harder than a Celebrity

Prosecutors estimate they splurged up to $500,000 in a single extravagant night at a club, tossed around luxury handbags valued in the tens of thousands, and donned high-end clothing and watches ranging from $100,000 to $500,000. They rented upscale residences in Miami, Los Angeles, and the Hamptons, booked private jets, employed a squad of bodyguards, and cruised around in luxury vehicles, some costing as much as $3.8 million. It’s like something out of a Hollywood movie, isn’t it?

The Downfall of the Mastermind: From Opulent Living to Legal Troubles

Lam was apprehended at a rented property in Miami on September 18, 2024. The man’s sentencing hearing has yet to be scheduled, but a status hearing is set for December 8. Lam admitted to one count of being part of a racketeering conspiracy, with a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro stated, “If you construct a cybercrime empire, we will locate you, dismantle your enterprise, and hold you accountable. This defendant led a global network that victimized individuals through deception, invaded their privacy, and stole hundreds of millions in cryptocurrency. Collaborating with our partners at the FBI and IRS-CI, we will continue to pursue criminals who exploit technology to rob innocent people.”

Summary: Pixels, Cash, and Stolen Crypto

In summary, Malone Lam and his eclectic team elevated their gaming abilities to new heights in the realm of crime, deceiving their way into cryptocurrency wealth. From Minecraft chats to criminal camaraderie, their escapades even included a professional thief! But as the saying goes, crime doesn’t pay – well, perhaps it does for a brief moment before you get caught!
