This Huge Silly Phone Case Turns Yer Phone Into A Rubbish E-Reader
Smartphones are awesome. E-readers are awesome too. Both are rectangular devices displaying text, right? So some clever clogs thought, “Let’s combine them!” And thus, the Astropad Bookcase came into existence. What a foolish concept. Frankly, I doubt the brainstorming for this went further than assembling the first prototype.
The Good: Not Entirely Ridiculous
Look, I get the draw. If you’re someone who burns through books on yer phone for ages, having a bulkier, more ergonomic case isn’t the worst suggestion ever. This case has a bit of thoughtfulness, I suppose. It employs a Magsafe mount to secure your phone, and it has an NFC tag inside that turns on “Do Not Disturb” mode when you’ve set it up via the app. Pretty handy, eh? The intention is to create a distraction-free environment while you read, almost like a techie twist on treating yourself to a spa day.
Looks: It’s Not Bad, I’ll Give It That
Alright, I’ll confess, it does have a certain appeal. It’s wrapped in faux leather – or “vegan leather” as the fancy folks say these days – and features a charming faux book spine along the side. The central portion is spacious enough for most phones (unless you’ve got one of those silly foldable types) and yeah, it feels hefty and somewhat… substantial? Ideal for pretending you’re all cultured down the local café while you’re actually scrolling through Reddit.

The Bad: It’s Huge… And Useless
But this is where it all goes wrong. This wretched contraption is the size of an e-reader. Don’t expect it to fold down or shrink for easier carrying. Nope, this is full-on bulk. You’re not reducing any weight or space compared to just toting around a Kindle or whatever in your bag or pocket. So, that’s basically the whole point of using yer phone for reading – gone. Yeah, thanks a lot.
The Price: Outrageous and Absurd
And just wait until you hear this – it’s fifty quid! Yep, fifty bloody pounds for a lump of plastic, magnets, and an NFC tag. For that price, I’d at least expect it to come with a battery pack. I could break apart some old kitchen magnets and attach them to a cheap wallet case for the same effect. There’s a tenner discount if you pre-order, but even then it feels like a slap in the face. And they claim it’ll ship in six weeks? Might as well disappear until next Christmas, Astropad.
Just Buy a Proper E-Reader, You Numpty
Let’s not mess around – if you want to read and do it comfortably, **just get a proper e-reader**. You can snag a PocketBook Basix Lux 4 or a Kobo Clara HD for about a hundred quid. Heck, pick up an older Kindle model second-hand for even less.
If you’re really trying to save some cash, just pop into your local pawn shop, Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, and find a decent e-reader for the price of a pint. These devices are everywhere. They’re light, comfy, and do the job without any hassle. You’re going to spend fifty quid on a chunk of plastic anyway – so why not invest in something that actually makes sense?
Conclusion: Knock It Off
I’m completely serious here. I read a ton on my phone, but I read infinitely more on my actual e-reader. Whenever I know I’ll have time to spare, that nifty little device goes in my coat or bag. I can’t fathom a single situation where I’d want to haul around something the size of an e-reader that’s… not genuinely an e-reader. Make it logical, please. It’s like selling someone a car without wheels and claiming they’re saving on tyres. Absolutely ridiculous.
Am I out of my mind? I feel as though I’ve stumbled into some alternate universe where this thing seems reasonable to anyone. If anyone understands this, please shed some light – but I’ll stick with my Kindle, thank you very much.
Quirky Title: “Did Someone Order a Side of Silly with That Plastic Block?”
There’s no getting around it, folks. The Astropad Bookcase is a fifty-quid answer to a problem you’ve already tackled. Do yourself a favour, buy a real e-reader and quit messing about with overpriced plastic nonsense. If you’re that determined to turn your phone into a book, just glue it inside an old Peter Rabbit cover. Same outcome, half the hassle.
