The Titan Departs
Dave Brown, a 19-year AWS veteran and S-team chief, is saying goodbye to Amazon. This fellow was a true giant in the AWS arena. Crossed paths with him a few times, and he was like a living encyclopedia of EC2. A deep diver he was. It’s a substantial setback for AWS, as Dave’s wealth of knowledge resembled the Tyne River.
Handing Over the Baton
Dave Treadwell, another S-teamer now overseeing Amazon Retail’s “eCommerce Foundation,” will be taking charge. A fancy way to say “bargain bin,” if you ask me. Yet, Brown’s exit probably won’t turn him into a direct competitor, unless they keep him under wraps with Amazonian enforcers during his notice.
Why Treadwell’s Position is Top-notch
Amazon Retail was previously the largest AWS client, quite a complicated customer at that. If I’ve got grievances with AWS, Tread likely has mountains to my molehill. So, if I could step into his shoes for a moment, here’s my to-do agenda for him:
GPU Capacity: Seize and Expand
Special allocations for select individuals, huh? Let’s merge retail intelligence and Spot Fleet strategies into an exciting capacity marketplace. Imagine this: “Only 2 p6-b300.48xlarge remaining. Ships from and sold by GPUZ4LOLZ (91% positive feedback).”
Savings Plans: Unearthing Discounts
The discount mechanisms like Reserved Instances were crafted by individuals who’ve never encountered a CFO in a rage-fueled fury. Treadwell’s in a position to implement dynamic pricing: on-demand rates that fluctuate hourly like third-party listings for questionable printer ink.
Excessive Instance Types
There are 1,354 EC2 instance types just within us-east-1. What a hassle! The console picker assumes you’ve got all the solutions. Let’s add a “Customers who launched m7i.large also launched …” suggestion box with sponsored placements. Is it in the customer’s best interest? Who cares; it’s what’s best for Amazon. That’s the retail way!
SageMaker: Quite the Tangle
With over 35 SageMaker offerings, or whatever they’re calling it at AWS, it’s an empire-building endeavor. Best to leave it alone, Tread. Introduce Customer Reviews: “1 star. Not as advertised. Received as Jupyter notebook; what am I supposed to do with this?” Fraudulent reviews from SageMaker teams? Handle them with fake review detection tech.
Quota Requests: A Real Begfest
You know it; plead for additional quota. Here’s a simple solution: Amazon Prime members don’t wait for anything. It’s an obvious choice!
The To-Do List
If it were me, that’d be my list. But I’m not Tread. He’ll have his own strategies, likely sprinkled with Amazon’s signature customer unfriendliness. We’ll know he’s settled in when our EC2 invoices come with advertisements and Knockoff starts running in the EC2 console.
Summary: When One Dave Exits, Another Enters the Scene
Dave Brown’s exit signifies a new chapter for AWS with Dave Treadwell taking the helm. Maneuvering through GPU confusion, perplexing savings plans, and an array of instance types, Treadwell has a significant task ahead. Let’s see if he’s prepared for a real Geordie challenge, or if we’ll just end up with more ads on our bills. Stay tuned at gadgetlad.co.uk for the latest antics.
