Negligence Encounters Potential: The AI Dilemma
Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos famously stated, “Your margin is my opportunity.” If you replace “margin” with “negligence,” you find a concept that pertains to AI-driven software creation. AI models or coding agents make errors, and many users of these tools exacerbate those mistakes by instructing their AI assistant to create software without the expertise required for proper development.
The Emergence of AI Mess Management
The resulting vibe-coded applications have spurred a new sector – AI mess management. Take note of Slopfix, “a trio of senior engineers dedicated to refining vibecoded codebases for improved maintainability.”
Introducing Konstantin Klyagin
Konstantin Klyagin, the Lisbon, Portugal-based founder of contract software company Redwerk and QAwerk, a quality assurance firm, informed GadgetLad that an increasing number of clients are seeking assistance to rectify vibe-coded applications. Klyagin has been in software development for the last twenty years, and with the rise of generative AI, customers have begun to request help with their vibe-coded solutions.
The Restoration Team Takes Action
“Back in November,” he noted, “we announced on our website our vibe code cleanup services. For us, this means not just minimizing code lines but also ensuring that the product is ready for production and can cater to actual customers, as I don’t believe that quantity [lines of code] is an appropriate measure. A reduction in [code] volume doesn’t automatically lead to more effective software.”
Beyond the Polished Exterior
Outwardly, Klyagin remarked, vibe-coded applications often appear appealing. However, it is crucial to consider how the business logic is executed and how the app manages unpredictable user behavior. “It’s not simply about how it was coded and the optimal functionality, but also concerning how validations operate and if there are security vulnerabilities,” he clarified.
Frequent Problems in Vibe-coded Applications
A prevalent issue, according to Klyagin, is code duplication. In an application his firm assessed for a client in New York, he reported finding redundant payment paths. Consequently, a price displayed on the app’s homepage differed from the figure shown during the onboarding process. Additionally, there were complications with permission management. “So you could navigate directly to the sign-up page and then to the payment page, bypassing profile creation,” he shared. Furthermore, there were issues with forms that were not sufficiently accessible for screen readers, and the testing coverage was inadequate.
Who Requires Cleanup Services?
Company founders with technical backgrounds who create apps, Klyagin said, usually do not require vibe-coding cleanup services. However, those without software development experience struggle with establishing the right architecture and practices for creating a maintainable app. “It’s your responsibility to set specific guidelines and guide [the AI model] toward superior software architecture and infrastructure,” he stated.
The Transforming Role of AI in Development
Prior to the rise of vibe coding, Klyagin observed that clients used to request code reviews and refactoring, which he viewed as vital components of the software development lifecycle. Alternatively, they might seek a code review when preparing to acquire an application.
AI as a Partner
As people increasingly utilize Claude Code and Codex – even though he has yet to encounter codebases created with open-weight models – there is significantly more QA and bug addressing. Klyagin indicated that his company has been handling this increased workload with AI assistance. “AI accelerates everyone,” he remarked. “We and our clients can now produce more code and features. Some do this more meticulously while others are less disciplined.”
Advocating for Discipline in Coding
“What we do is educate founders and companies that adopt generative AI for coding about the importance of discipline. This discipline is enduring. You must still define what you are creating and ensure it is tested.”
Conclusion – AI: The New Co-Pilot
AI may be at the helm, but it still requires a human in the passenger seat to direct its path. Whether it’s tidying up the vibe-coded clutter or maintaining development focus, a touch of straightforward wisdom is invaluable.
