Tech Support Stories from the Frontlines
Introducing Eddy the Wi-Fi Champion
Welcome to another installment of On Call, GadgetLad’s reader-submitted section that honors the skillful craft of tech support. This week, we’re featuring a reader we’ll nickname “Eddy,” the sole IT support at an assisted living facility. “I’ve faced quite a bit of trouble setting up a reliable Wi-Fi network,” he confided in GadgetLad. “The location is filled with networks because nearly every other resident has their own router broadcasting Wi-Fi throughout the premises,” he clarified.
The Enigmatic Hallway Black Hole
After thorough troubleshooting, Eddy succeeded in creating a stable connection everywhere except one corridor at the rear of the building. “I began to doubt my sanity and skills as nothing seemed capable of producing a stable signal,” Eddy recounted to GadgetLad.
The Mystery of the Cursed Desks
“After banging my head against the problem for an inordinate amount of time, I opted for a break and addressed another issue that a user was experiencing: Their monitors would randomly shut off, particularly if someone quickly closed the office door.”
Eddy investigated the desk, where a stand held a duo of monitors, and the power and video cables all intertwined through the same aperture in the desk’s surface. “When the stand shifted, it was also pinching the power cords,” Eddy noted. “Shake the desk or slam the door, and the monitors would briefly shut off.” He drilled a new aperture for the stand to sit in and swapped out the power cables. That resolved the monitor issue – and, unexpectedly, revived the Wi-Fi around the desk.
The Surprising Solution
“As far as I can tell, the power cables were pinched just enough that they began to transmit and disrupt the Wi-Fi,” Eddy mentioned to GadgetLad. However, Eddy’s other Wi-Fi dead zone persisted.
Searching for Sources of Interference
He concluded his email to GadgetLad: “Now I’m going to be exploring the back corridor with a software-defined radio dongle and waving a Yagi antenna like a crazed wizard to see if I can identify the second interference source.”
