Forget iPhone Duo – Motorola’s latest treasure might be my favorite phone

As I’ve openly acknowledged numerous times, I’m not a fan of foldable devices. Nonetheless, no smartphone in 2026 has caught my interest more than Apple’s iPhone Duo, particularly for its potential to revolutionize a significant portion of the market.

Until the Motorola Signature 27, that is.

While I have been admiring the sleek iPhone Duo design and its thoughtfully crafted software from a distance, I can assert with certainty that purchasing one would never be on my agenda. The price is exorbitant (especially outside the US), and as I mentioned, foldables aren’t my preference.

However, the Motorola Signature 27 is a device I can genuinely see myself using on a daily basis, even at this early pre-release phase. Here’s why.

Recent Developments in Motorola

As we near the midpoint of 2026, it has not been a banner year for smartphones. Rising component costs have hindered innovation and placed flagship devices out of many people’s financial reach.

If I had to select one manufacturer that has most impressed me during this lackluster year, it would undoubtedly be Motorola. The Motorola Razr Fold won over even this foldable skeptic with its responsive design and well-rounded camera performance.

This device was essentially a flexible iteration of the original Motorola Signature, which initially captured my attention earlier this year.

I doubt the Signature will win many year-end accolades, but it has subtly become one of my personal favorites. Motorola’s design remains unique, successfully reviving the nearly forgotten slender phone concept – though this seemed to go unnoticed by many.

Moreover, its camera system is commendable (especially for such a thin phone), and Motorola’s software still attracts with its sleek design – even if its early exploration of AI has been somewhat unfocused.

True, performance may not rank at the very top of the industry. However, the same can be said for its pricing – which has grown increasingly relevant as the year progresses.

Not resting on prior achievements

In summary, Motorola’s last two top-tier smartphones have been superb, making me eager to see what’s next.

It turns out that the Motorola Signature 27 is on the horizon, and even at this early, information-scarce stage, it far exceeds my expectations.

Admittedly, those expectations have been tempered by a slew of similar 2026 models (so far). The Google Pixel 11 Pro is merely the Pixel 10 Pro with a superfluous light added, while the iPhone 18 Pro is simply the iPhone 17 Pro without an unnecessary light. The same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S26.

And all are pricier than their predecessors.

There’s cause for optimism regarding the Xiaomi 18 Pro, Honor Magic 9 Pro Max, and Oppo Find X10, each of which presents varying advancements in hardware, but all would need substantial UI modifications to compel me to spend my money, along with something novel in design.

The Motorola Signature 27, however… well, just take a look at it. It’s daring and stunning, a significant progression of the Motorola Signature aesthetic featuring a futuristic camera setup.

Those Pantone hues and soft material finishes are evident again, infusing a touch of class.

It’s built to last as well, boasting a MIL-STD-810H military-grade construction and a textured “Tactical Weave” finish in lieu of slick, breakable glass. You might not even feel the urge to use a case with it, which greatly appeals to me.

Designed to impress

The Motorola Signature 27 isn’t merely about looks either. Its specifications are shaping up to be impressive.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is expected to be standard for top-end Android devices in the coming year, but it’s worth noting that Motorola has opted for the superior variant instead of settling for less, as it might have previously.

Moreover, that powerful chip will be paired with an advanced ArcticMesh cooling system that’s 40% larger than its predecessor. This device is set to perform at lightning speed, and for extended durations.

The unique camera setup appears to be quite remarkable as well. As I’ve already pointed out, Motorola has substantially improved its photography capabilities, and the Signature 27 is introducing a new 50MP Sony LYTIA 910 primary sensor, alongside a 200MP periscope telephoto.

It seems there will also be a secondary telephoto camera, likely providing a considerable amount of zoom versatility at a time when Samsung is rumored to be eliminating one of its telephoto options for the upcoming Ultra model.

Then there’s the newly formed partnership with Bang & Olufsen. While it’s prudent to approach such collaborations with skepticism, the Danish luxury audio brand is renowned for its quality.

In the Motorola Signature 27, “Audio by Bang & Olufsen” indicates a variety of audio mode adjustments, each tailored for specific types of content.

At least one of the stereo speakers will be hidden beneath the rear cover, seemingly leveraging the cover material to emit sound. Whether this will enhance the output (possibly the bass?) remains to be seen, but it certainly piques my interest.

Cautious Anticipation

I’m not ready to place a pre-order for the Motorola Signature 27 just yet. I require ample hands-on experience, plus there’s the consideration of pricing (my prediction is it’s likely to be significantly more than the original Motorola Signature).

I hope to see Motorola streamline its AI applications greatly.

But presently, as things stand, the Motorola Signature 27 is the device I am most eager to evaluate in the final quarter of 2026.
