Alien Returns, and It’s Slithering onto Our Planet
Back in 1979, we found ourselves dragged into the depths of space with our heroine Ellen Ripley and the unfortunate crew of the Nostromo to confront the most terrifying creature to emerge from Ridley Scott’s imagination— the Xenomorph. Fast forward over 30 years, and FX is bringing the horror home where it feels more comfortable. The prequel series to the iconic film is landing on our grounds and it’s aptly titled… Alien: Earth.
Let’s be real here— the title isn’t likely to snag any accolades anytime soon. However, considering the recent entries in the franchise (eyes on you, Alien: Covenant), there’s potential for something worthwhile here.
Noah Hawley to the Rescue… Perhaps
Noah Howley, the chap behind the unique and rather odd TV sensations Fargo and Legion, is stepping up as the creator, showrunner, and director. Ridley Scott, who gave us the very first Alien movie, will still be involved as executive producer. The guy just can’t let go, can he?
It’s also notable that Scott is immersed in another venture within the Alien realm— the upcoming film *Alien: Romulus.* It made its debut in theaters this August. Let’s hope it rekindles our adrenaline.
Both *Alien: Earth* and *Alien: Romulus* are geared towards broadening the universe and pulling in a new generation of unfortunate souls who’ll have trouble sleeping at night. FX promises a multi-season narrative with a conclusive end— which, let’s admit, is a relief considering how many series overstay their welcome.
So, here’s what we have on *Alien: Earth* so far.
When is *Alien: Earth* Slithering onto Our Screens?
The show was announced back in 2020, but it’s been slow to take off. Filming commenced in Thailand on April 19, 2024, and is set to conclude in July. This means we won’t see this series until 2025, as confirmed by FX chief John Landgraf during the 2024 Television Critics Association winter press tour (thanks for the heads-up, John).
No updates yet on which month in 2025 it will grace our screens, so keep your schedules flexible. And if you’re in the U.S., it’ll be available on Hulu. In other regions, it’ll arrive on Star and Disney+. Better start budgeting those subscriptions, folks.
What’s the Buzz About the Plot of *Alien: Earth*?
Alright, this may catch you off guard, but we won’t be zooming through deep space avoiding chest-bursters this time. Nope, this series brings the Xenomorph to Earth, but it’s set 30 years prior to the events of Ridley’s original Alien film.
Now, if you recall, Alien took place in 2122, so this new show is transporting us back to the year 2092. *Alien: Earth* will delve into the shady dealings of the notorious Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Yes, that shady mega-corp that’s been involved in everything from creating androids to setting up space colonies and, oh, trying to weaponize the Xenomorph.
The series will shed light on the early days of the Weyland-Yutani debacle and their frantic efforts to outpace the competition in the creation of android life. How this will intertwine with the Xenomorphs? That remains to be seen, but it’s bound to be intriguing.
A Touch of Philosophy, and a Whole Load of Mayhem
Our mate Noah Hawley shared some insights in an interview with *Esquire* back in 2022. He described the series as somewhat of a tech race— think Edison versus Westinghouse but with more androids, cyborgs, and— fingers crossed— a decent amount of blood ‘n guts.
Hawley also mentioned he’s contemplating the timeless sci-fi question: Does humanity merit survival? Let’s face it, if you’ve seen our antics during a night out in the Bigg Market, the likely answer’s “nah.”
A “Big Creative Reimagining” – That’s What They Said Last Time
FX CEO John Landgraf had a chat with *Deadline* and referred to the show as a “big imaginative reimagining” of the Alien legacy. He likened it to what Hawley achieved with *Fargo*— faithful, but with fresh twists. If you’re unsure whether to be excited or doubtful, you’re not alone, folks. They’ve teased some significant surprises, so let’s hope they come through.
And just to clarify— don’t anticipate seeing Ellen Ripley or any other recognizable faces. This is something brand new, and although it’s set in the same universe, it’s a clean slate.
Is There a Trailer for *Alien: Earth*?
Trailer? Not yet, but we do have a teaser for you. FX has released a brief snippet that suggests the Xenomorph coming to Earth. It’s enough to send chills down your spine.
Who’s in the Cast of *Alien: Earth*?
Alright, here’s the roster of brave individuals who’ve agreed to face the Xenomorph on our planet:

– **Sandra Yi Sencindiver**: This lass from *Foundation* will take on the role of Yatani, a high-ranking official at Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Prepare for some corporate betrayals.
Here are the remaining cast members:
– **Timothy Olyphant** as Kirsh
