The Craze for Agentic AI
Three-quarters of business leaders are proclaiming, “We are embracing agentic AI!” However, according to Forrester, only a small percentage have transitioned from experimenting to actual significant production implementations. This doesn’t prevent vendors from splashing “agentic” across their marketing materials as if it’s the latest trend, but let’s be honest: most organizations are still muddling through between playing around and truly delivering any business benefit.
Bots That Do More Than Brew Coffee
Forrester suggests that by 2026, agentic AI will have reached a pivotal moment. Those futuristic agents are no longer just a fantasy. In simple terms, the bots are finally proving their value beyond a quick five-minute chore. Some vendors claim their agents can operate for days, weeks, or even months. From software development to research tasks, the demonstrations look impressive – until they crash against the wall of business realities.
Scaling the Agentic Chaos
Companies are broadening their agentic aspirations, but they appear to struggle when it comes to scaling them. Governance remains chaotic, their strategies as murky as ever, and organizations are tearing their hair out trying to demonstrate any return on investment that would justify wider implementation. Forrester believes it’s not the quantity of AI agents that’s at fault; it’s the chaotic environment around their management.
Disconnected Agents and Disorder
Numerous organizations are crafting agents as if they’ve never considered collaboration, according to the report. There’s no evident plan for tracking, managing, or coordinating them to work in unison. Acceptable for a pilot project, but turns into chaos when numerous agents start making decisions, taking charge, and scattering information throughout the business like confetti.
Governance and Widespread Agents
Forrester is skeptical that governance policies will resolve this confusion. Over half of enterprises are still trapped in what is humorously referred to as “agentic sprawl,” even with governance frameworks and official policies established. Drafting rules is one matter; implementing them is an entirely different challenge. Autonomous systems require automated safeguards – it’s not simply about writing down rules but maintaining control over those unruly agents.
The Core Challenge
The main challenge? It’s not the creation of AI agents. No, it’s assigning them meaningful tasks that don’t disintegrate the moment they encounter the organizational landscape. Or, as Forrester succinctly states: “Until companies link agent autonomy to tangible alterations in work processes, agentic AI will remain ensnared in proof-of-concept limbo.”
The AI Circus Persists
It appears that exclaiming, “I have agentic AI!” is far simpler than making it perform any practical tasks in reality. But at least the vendors are enjoying the spectacle!
