Azure SQL Data Sync closes its doors to new users until 2027

Bid Farewell to New Deployments

Microsoft is axing new Azure SQL Data Sync deployments, mate. If your subscription hasn’t tried it out yet, tough cookies. This restriction took effect on September 9 and the entire operation wraps up by September 30, 2027. Those who already have it functional can still tinker with sync groups and member databases until then, but if you’ve been lazing about, it’s game over for you.

The Hub-and-Spoke Capers

This service operates on a hub-and-spoke framework. Essentially, your Azure SQL database serves as the main hub, managing other databases through grouping for synchronization. Whether you’re utilizing other Azure SQL databases or on-premises SQL Server databases, you’ll need a sync agent to maintain harmony. There’s a conflict resolution policy that determines whether the hub or the smaller databases prevails when changes clash.

Hybrid and Globally Distributed Applications

SQL Data Sync excelled at managing hybrid environments, distributing your applications and databases between local and Azure. It was also beneficial for applications that are spread around the world. But sadly, all good things…

Time for a Fresh Strategy, Mate

The tech giant has essentially stated “manage it yourself” regarding finding an alternative. They’ve been tight-lipped about the technical specifics for discontinuing the service, mentioning “operational, security, and compliance requirements.” They provided us two years’ notice, but now’s the time to get moving if you haven’t already. Microsoft’s recommendations for substitutes aren’t exactly a magic bullet, featuring options like Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions, read replicas, linked servers, database mirroring, availability groups, and transactional replication. None replicate SQL Data Sync’s functionality precisely.

Time to Move, People

If you’re still relying on it, you’ve got just over a year to transition before D-Day arrives. Those without a fallback plan need to get one sorted before the service disappears.

In Summary: Pack Your Bags, Sync’s Heading to the Graveyard!

Microsoft has bid adieu to Azure SQL Data Sync. Newcomers, no point in trying to knock on the door. If you’ve been dozing, looks like you missed the boat. Better map out your next steps, as this one’s heading the way of the dinosaurs by 2027. Cheers!
