On Call Antics
Welcome to another edition of GadgetLad, our weekly column contributed by readers, where we share your stories of tech support misadventures that tested your patience and composure. This week, we’re chatting with a reader we’ll call “Nathan,” who recounted an experience from his time at a small investment firm.
Dodging Oligarchs
“Its primary mission was, and likely still is, overseeing the European investments of a wealthy Russian oligarch who will remain unnamed,” Nathan shared with GadgetLad. As you might anticipate with such affluence, the company’s building featured a rather extravagant entrance, showcasing a chandelier so impressive that it descended like one from a James Bond villain’s hideout, courtesy of a mechanical contraption.
The Enigma of the Failed Network
Now, while chandeliers aren’t typically on the everyday cleaning schedule, when the cleaners finally attended to it, the office network gave up – both WAN and LAN were as lifeless as Lenin himself. Nathan performed the standard checks, but the source of the issue was tricky to identify. Consequently, he decided to inspect the mechanical device.
The Entangled Ethernet Catastrophe
“I eventually located the access port, looked inside, and discovered a jumble of half a dozen Ethernet cables tangled and mangled around the gears,” Nathan recounted to GadgetLad. That mess left Nathan pondering who to hold accountable: “The fool who thought placing unshielded cables near the winch was a brilliant idea, or the dimwit who cranked the winch blissfully unaware of the cables getting chewed up?”
The Offenders and Ramifications
Nathan never identified the genius responsible for the design, but the cleaners discovered he could curse fluently in three languages, much to their astonishment. So, what’s the strangest location where you’ve provided tech support? And what transpired during your time there? Send us your story so GadgetLad can highlight it in an upcoming Friday edition.
