Even Data Breaches Are Enlarged in Texas – GadgetLad

Surprise, Surprise – Data Breach Tales from Texas

Indeed, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) believes that 3 million Texans had their information compromised following a breach at one of its vendors. If you hold a state-issued hunting or fishing license, you may be among those affected. These audacious hackers targeted the vendor that issues the licenses and accessed customer data.

License Holders – What’s Been Exposed?

Reportedly, information such as driving license and passport numbers may have been compromised. They also managed to acquire basic personal details like email addresses, phone numbers, and home addresses. However, at least Social Security numbers (SSNs), financial data, or information about children were not intercepted, according to the department.

Oh, the Ironic Submission!

The submission to the Office of the Attorney General presents a contrasting view, implying that names and SSNs were also involved. In typical fashion, Texans who are affected will receive a complimentary year of credit monitoring services from Kroll, provided they register by September 14. Better hurry up!

Kroll Remains Silent

A webpage by Kroll dedicated to the incident has yet to pinpoint when the breach occurred, but TPWD informed Texas Cyber Command on May 13. They have voiced their seriousness regarding the situation, discussing enhanced security protocols. Their staff, comprised of hunters and anglers, were also impacted by this ordeal.

What’s the Scoop on Future Licenses?

TPWD is reportedly collaborating with the vendor to improve security, including enhanced monitoring and access controls. New license sales are still scheduled for August, but the website to purchase them was not functioning the last time I checked. Talk about being a fish out of water!

Summary

Wow, Texas! You’ve Outdone Yourself!

Listen, Texas, you may be known for large hats and even larger steaks, but this data breach takes the cake. With millions affected and data slipping through like a fish in a tackle box, there’s work to do. TPWD, get your act together quicker than a Jack Russell after a squirrel!
