Fruit Fly Brain Enters Crypto Turmoil: A GadgetLad Exclusive

The Crazy Realm of Stonkfly

To grasp how 2026 is unfolding, in March GadgetLad disclosed that researchers had linked a simulated fruit fly brain to a virtual body, allowing it to roam a virtual environment. Now, another simulated fly nervous system is engaging in cryptocurrency trading. Presenting Stonkfly, the innovative creation of Coinbase software developer Alex Wormuth. His X post proudly declared: “I gave the fly brain $100 to trade bitcoin. Dopamine neurons activate when the fly earns profit. Neuron activity dictates buy/sell choices and executes trades on coinbase. Will the fly amass wealth?” Well, all we can say is Alex ought to reconsider his life decisions. But honestly, more absurd events have transpired this year, such as the US president hinting he could deploy the military to intervene in a misbehaving bond market.

Prior Experiments & Fly Brain Technology

Attentive readers will remember that scientists at Eon Systems utilized several existing components: a fruit fly brain scan, a tool for neuron modeling, a representation of some of the fly’s muscles and body, along with a very basic virtual setting. Following their connection, the group asserted that the outcome exhibited certain behaviors resembling those of a real insect.

The Stonkfly Distinction

Stonkfly is unique. It employs a model of a male fly’s brain and ventral nerve cord, as opposed to the female brain scan utilized in the previous study. It lacks a physical body, and engineered interfaces provide it with market data and convert neural activity into trading choices. The explanation on GitHub – as it is an open-source initiative – clarifies that the model utilizes engineered reinforcement signals, not imitated pain receptors, while synaptic alterations “do not prove that it learns to trade profitably.” The foundational network is extensive, consisting of 166,700 nodes, 25,582,938 directed connections, and 124,177,617 synaptic interactions.

Acquisition and Constraints

The project documentation nevertheless outlines criteria qualifying as successful learning, along with some thoughtful caveats. “Compare to cash and straightforward exposure baselines as well: climbing crypto prices alone can make any buyer appear adept,” the documentation states. “No profitable learning, strategy enhancement, biological replication, or live-funded performance has been exhibited by this repository’s evaluations,” it adds.

A Peek into the Future

We urge Wormuth to be less humble. Before the year’s end, we foresee Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh being supplanted by a disembodied virtual insect brain. It isn’t even late September yet, after all.
