Google Secures AirDrop Technology for Android
No, you’re not imagining things. Google is at last bringing one of the iPhone’s cherished features to Android – and it’s about time!
The Arrival of AirDrop on Android
AirDrop has been an essential feature for iOS since 2013, enabling smooth sharing of photos, videos, and various files among iPhones, iPads, and Macs effortlessly.
Android has its equivalent known as Quick Share, but it has remained a small community for Google devices until now.
Cross-Platform File Sharing Has Arrived
In an unexpected development, Google has announced they’re “creating a way for Quick Share to be compatible with AirDrop.” Therefore, we’re discussing file transfers between Android and iOS devices, no longer confined to their separate groups.
Initially, it will launch with the Pixel 10 series, but Google plans to extend it to more Android devices. There’s no information yet on the duration or whether all Android 16 devices will receive this feature.

To transfer files to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, ensure you’ve activated the AirDrop setting “Everyone for 10 Minutes.” On Android, select “Everyone” or “Everyone for 10 minutes.” And remember, both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices.
A Decision Made in Brussels
While it may look like there’s harmony between Google and Apple, that’s far from the truth.
Alex Moriconi, a Communications Manager at Google, confirmed to The Verge that Apple wasn’t included in this arrangement. Google asserts that the feature isn’t a workaround, stating “the connection is direct and peer-to-peer,” avoiding any questionable security concerns.
Hats Off to the EU
The introduction of this shiny new feature is a result of the EU flexing its regulatory authority. As ArsTechnica indicates, it’s due to the new Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations.
Apple has been instructed to discard their treasured proprietary protocol associated with AirDrop in favor of a new standard, starting with iOS 26.

Foundry
After the software’s launch in September, anyone could have theoretically developed a wireless sharing solution compatible with AirDrop. However, Google, as the creator of Android with its own variation, was positioned advantageously.
So, there you have it. After a 12-year period, AirDrop will at last enable file sharing with Android devices. If all goes well, both Google and the EU deserve recognition.
