Pixel’s Now Playing Feature Is Acting Up
One of the delightful little benefits of having a Google Pixel has recently taken a turn for the worse, much to the annoyance of numerous users.
The Now Playing function is one of those charming little features that make owning a Pixel such a treat. It continuously eavesdrops (slightly unsettling, isn’t it, but handy) for any music playing nearby.
From the Pixel 2 all the way through to today’s Pixel 9 models, it’s supposed to detect whatever song is playing and display it on your lock screen. It also keeps a record of the tracks in the Now Playing history, allowing you to revisit what you’ve been vibing to.
What’s the Issue with Now Playing?
Sounds fantastic, doesn’t it? Indeed, when it operates correctly. However, according to Android Authority, a lot of Pixel owners are reporting that it’s malfunctioning.
Many users on Reddit have chimed in, claiming their Pixels have ceased to recognize songs, despite having verified that Now Playing is activated in the settings.
One user insists that their Pixel 6 was spot on for identifying music—whether it was done automatically or manually. But recently? It’s as dependable as a politician’s oath.
Tried It Myself – It’s a Mixed Bag
Listen, I’ve struggled with the same problem on my own Pixel 9 Pro. Some days it performs well, picking up tracks from the gym, the bar, or whatever’s blasting from the radio. Other days, nothing.
I was in a pub with a friend who owns a Pixel 7a, and neither of our devices could identify any music, even though classic hits were playing. You know something’s wrong when it can’t even detect a bit of funk or soul.
As a test, I played three songs consecutively from YouTube Music on my Pixel. Only the last one appeared on Now Playing. Disappointing.

So, Is Now Playing Completely Malfunctioning?
A few troublesome instances here and there might not warrant much complaint, but this problem appears to be surfacing across a multitude of Pixel devices. Something’s clearly amiss.
Google attempted to address it back in January by releasing an update for Android System Intelligence, stating they had resolved certain bugs linked to album art. Clearly, it didn’t have much impact.
If you’re in dire need of a remedy, try clearing the Now Playing cache by navigating to **Settings > Apps > All Apps > Android System Intelligence > Storage and cache**, then selecting **Clear cache**.
Besides that, we’re all just waiting for Google to genuinely rectify the situation.

Summary: Like a DJ That Forgot How to Mix
Google’s Now Playing used to be a fantastic feature—one of the little things that made Pixel users feel superior. But now? It’s dropping the ball left and right.
If you enjoy discovering new music or simply showing off your Pixel’s party trick, this is a major disappointment. Let’s hope Google gets its act together and resolves it promptly. Otherwise, we may need to start Shazam’ing like it’s 2010 again.
