Google has revealed a “surprise Pixel Drop” for its Pixel smartphones and smartwatches, which isn’t quite surprising at all.
We find ourselves slightly puzzled by this choice of wording from Google. After all, the company consistently rolls out one of its feature-rich firmware updates for its Pixel devices – typically every few months, but lately on a monthly basis.
Here’s our recap of the June Pixel Drop. And here’s a brief overview of the May Pixel Drop.
Disregarding the misuse of the term ‘surprise,’ here’s what Google has introduced in the July Pixel Drop. It’s not the largest update we’ve encountered, but it still includes some exciting features.
Create videos with Veo 3
Veo 3 has finally arrived, bringing Google’s advanced AI video creation tool to Pixel phones. Specifically, this is for those holding a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription.
As Google is eager to emphasize, if you purchased a Pixel 9 Pro, you’ll receive a complimentary year subscription. You can grab one of these at a fantastic price during Amazon’s Prime Day deals currently, and considering how small the upgrade the Pixel 10 Pro appears to be, this could be a wise purchase.
But we digress. With Veo 3, you can type out a concept and have it automatically converted into a remarkably realistic AI-generated video – complete with audio. It’s very impressive, assuming you manage to suppress the existential anxiety it brings.
Gemini on Pixel Watch
Gemini has debuted on Pixel Watch devices – and it’s about time.
The functionality to use natural language requests to create playlists and inquire about local dining options always seemed like a feature perfect for a small wrist display.
Post-update, Gemini will replace Google Assistant, as revealed back in May.
This implies that the recently revealed Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 won’t be the first smartwatch to feature Gemini after all.
Enhanced Circle to Search
Circle to Search has also undergone an enhancement in the July Pixel Drop. AI Mode allows follow-up inquiries about on-screen details, though it is currently available only in the U.S. and India.
More generally, you can now utilize Circle to Search while gaming to seek assistance without switching applications. It will present relevant articles and even precisely timestamped videos to help you navigate your current challenge.
The July Pixel Update should start rolling out shortly. Navigate to System > Software updates and verify if it’s available on your Pixel device.
Summary
Underwhelming Pixel Drop
So there you have it, everyone. Google’s July Pixel Drop – not exactly the sensational release we were looking for, but there are a few clever features nonetheless. Just keep in mind, not every surprise is worth celebrating. Cheers!
