Google’s ‘Personalisation in Play’: Just a Snazzy Term for Advertising
So, at the close of summer, our friends at Google kicked off this new initiative called *Personalisation in Play*. Sounds all posh, right? But let’s be honest — it’s merely *ads* dressed up as “personal suggestions.” Supposedly, based on your app and game interactions, Google will now present you with “relevant offers.” Relevant? Please. No one asked for that.
But don’t worry. You can actually tell Google to take a hike with this rubbish and choose what personalisation you want. Here’s how to do just that.
Step 1: Sign Into Google Play
First things first. Navigate to play.google.com or launch the Google Play Store on your Android device. Log in as you normally would. Shouldn’t be tricky unless your passwords resemble WiFi security codes.
Step 2: Locate Your Profile Icon
Once logged in, seek out that silly round profile icon in the upper right corner. Tap or click it, and from the dropdown menu, select *Personalisation in Play*.
Step 3: Open ‘Play Personalisation and History’
Under *Personalisation in Play*, you’ll find something labeled *Play personalisation and history*. Click it to reveal more options. It’s as if they’re purposely hiding it, isn’t it?
Step 4: Manage Your Web & App Activity
Now you’re getting to the important part. Look for *Web and App Activity* (don’t fret, it’s not as shady as it sounds). Beside it, there’s a dropdown menu marked *On*. From here, you can either disable that activity entirely, so Google stops tracking your every move, or if you’re feeling particularly bold, delete every bit of previous data.

What Happens If You Turn This Off?
Once you’ve told Google where to shove it, they won’t gather any of your activity while you’re using their services and apps. This means no more location data (so say goodbye to “Magaluf Hotel Deals” after a wild night out). The ads you’ll see will turn into more generic ones, like a late-night infomercial for some kind of all-in-one vacuum mop.
You Might Just Relax… Kind Of
So yes, it means you won’t be constantly hunted by tailored ads. But don’t get too thrilled — you’ll still have ads. They’ll just be about things you couldn’t care less about. Swings and roundabouts, right?
In Summary: Google Always Knows Best… Except When It Doesn’t
There you have it — it’s incredibly easy to stop Google from bombarding you with ads about that “fitness app” you opened once and promptly ignored. You have the control now, and it’ll barely take five minutes to fix. After that, you can enjoy somewhat less intrusive advertising (but still a fair bit of it).
