Farewell to Live Chat in Teams
Microsoft is shutting down Live chat in Teams, sending it to the tech graveyard on October 5. Once that happens, customer messages will be like echoes in an empty space. The feature barely lasted 18 months before Microsoft opted to invest in something more attractive. Typical, right? They halted new rollouts on August 6, so if you haven’t already removed it from your site, do it quickly before it disappears like your will to get out of bed on a Monday morning.
The Rise and Fall of a Simple Tool
Live chat served as your basic tool for managing customer conversations. Just add a widget to your site, and watch the messages either flow or trickle into your support team’s Teams app. It was compatible with Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, and Premium, allowing you to designate up to 25 brave individuals to handle the influx of chat confusion. But fear not, your existing data and channels are secure… at least until something else comes along and displaces them.
Will Dynamics 365 Save the Day?
So, what is Microsoft suggesting you use instead? Dynamics 365 Contact Center with Live Chat, it seems. And don’t forget about Copilot Studio’s AI capabilities. That’s correct, everyone. AI is stepping in to transform the chat landscape. We’ve got to evolve with the times, right? Back in March 2025, they were celebrating the grand launch of Live chat. Brenna Robinson, the top executive at Microsoft, was quite pleased about this “new level” of customer interaction. Not so much anymore, Brenna. Hope you’re enjoying your new role in AI Business Solutions!
Additional Microsoft Madness
Live chat is just the latest casualty of Microsoft’s spring cleaning frenzy. They’ve been on a bit of a tear lately. Remember Teams live events? Gone, replaced with some “events experience” jargon. And say goodbye to Together mode—it’s out of the picture. It seems Microsoft is trying to slim down their overly bulky platform. But what are these “new customer engagement” methods? No updates yet, but they’ve got Copilot Studio on standby. Place your bets on more AI infiltrating our lives.
Conclusion: Adieu, Goodbye, Auf Wiedersehen!
Microsoft is bidding farewell to Live chat in Teams, leaving us with nothing but memories and an abundance of AI conversations. Whether you’re lamenting its departure or indifferent, the tech world continues to evolve. Just keep in mind, when Microsoft decides to clean house, nothing is off-limits—not even your cherished chat widget.
