When might the Assassin’s Creed TV series premiere?
Progress on the Assassin’s Creed TV series (announced some years back) is finally picking up momentum – Netflix has revealed the actor taking on one of the primary roles in the adaptation.
The first updates regarding Netflix’s adaptation of the game surfaced in 2020, when the streaming platform secured a deal with Ubisoft, the studio responsible for Assassin’s Creed and other franchises like Prince of Persia and Watch Dogs. In July 2025, it was officially stated that the Assassin’s Creed TV series was in development, with Roberto Patino and David Wiener leading as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.
Patino has previously worked as a writer on series like Westworld and Sons of Anarchy. He is also the creator of the HBO series DMZ. Wiener has served as a writer for Fear the Walking Dead, Brave New World, and Halo in the past.
Assassin’s Creed has had one previous adaptation. However, the 2016 film starring Michael Fassbender was criticized by both fans of the game and reviewers.
Expectations for the Netflix series are more optimistic – here’s what we know so far.
According to Deadline, filming for Netflix’s series will commence in 2026 in Italy. It’s reasonable to assume that both set production and post-production might take around a year. Including time for marketing and promotion, we anticipate the premiere of Assassin’s Creed TV at the end of 2027 at the earliest.
What is the storyline of the Assassin’s Creed TV series?
The series will draw from the acclaimed game series, which currently encompasses 14 entries, not counting various spin-offs. The narrative focuses on the struggle between the Order of Assassins and the Knights Templar.
As the official logline for the show states:
[The series is] centered on the covert conflict between two enigmatic factions – one aim to dictate mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other strives to uphold free will. The series tracks its characters through significant historical events as they vie to impact humanity’s fate.
Both factions are searching for and attempting to seize control of powerful relics known as Pieces of Eden. The Assassins, representing free will, and the Templars, favoring manipulation, have been entangled in their battle for centuries. The Knights developed a sophisticated device named the Animus, which can unlock the user’s ancestral memories based on their genetic makeup.
The games take place in both contemporary settings and simulations of past eras generated from ancestral memories.
Sadly, no specifics have been provided regarding the plot of Netflix’s series. Based on the mention of the Animus, it’s presumed that the series will blend a modern narrative with a historical one once more.
We also do not yet know if they will delve into an original story (as Michael Fassbender’s film did), or if they will adapt one or more of the established games. If the latter is the choice, there are various characters and eras available to select from. Here are some key ones from the primary game installments:
- Third Crusade in the Holy Land with Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad
- Italian Renaissance featuring Ezio Auditore da Firenze
- American Revolution with Connor Kenway (Ratonhnhaké:ton)
- Caribbean Golden Age of Piracy starring Edward Kenway
- French Revolution with Arno Victor Dorian
- Victorian London with Jacob and Evie Frye
- Ancient Egypt with Bayek
- Peloponnesian War with Alexios and/or Kassandra
- Viking invasion of Britain with Eivor
- Islamic Golden Age with Basim Ibn Ishaq
- Sengoku period in Japan with Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke
- Present day with Desmond Miles and/or Layla Hassan

It’s possible that the show may adopt an anthology format, enabling it to shift between various time periods each series. If we had to guess which story would be the most recognizable to adapt, it would likely be that of Ezio – the lead character of Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed Revelations.
Given that the initial season is set to be filmed in Italy, this is appearing more probable. Assassin’s Creed II is positioned in Florence, Venice, and the adjacent areas during the Renaissance – with Desmond Miles reliving Ezio’s memories through the Animus.
That being said, this game also indicates that Abstergo’s lab is situated in modern-day Rome, so only segments set in the 21st century may be recorded in Italy. Thus, any historical period could be chosen to intertwine with contemporary events.

Who features in the Assassin’s Creed TV series?
So far, Netflix has disclosed just one star’s involvement in the series. Toby Wallace, recognized for his roles in Euphoria and Bikeriders, will portray one of the main characters in the series. At present, it is unclear which character he will be playing.
Who might Toby Wallace portray in the Assassin’s Creed TV series?
As filming is set to occur in Italy, there are two likely characters he could embody. The first is Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the lead character from the second game. However, Wallace is not Italian – he is a British-born Australian.
As previously mentioned, the contemporary storyline is also based in Italy, which means Wallace could also be playing the modern protagonist, Desmond Miles – an American (Wallace has undertaken American roles in the past). Portraying Desmond would, in theory, confine him to the series for a longer period if Netflix intends to explore various time frames, as Miles relives the lives of three previous assassins altogether.
Both Ezio and Desmond bear a striking resemblance (by design), so Wallace could effectively represent either of them.
Alternatively, he might portray another character, possibly one from the aforementioned list (like Altair), or a completely new addition to the franchise.
We’ll just have to wait to see if Netflix reveals any further details in the upcoming months.
