Nvidia-supported optics company increases wafer production fourfold to meet AI requirements.

Nvidia’s Investment in Optics: A Daring Move

As AI technologies expand, optics are emerging as a pivotal element. Recently at Computex, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang predicted that Marvell would evolve into the next trillion-dollar phenomenon, primarily due to optics. Currently, Coherent – Nvidia’s photonics partner – is poised to quadruple indium phosphide (InP) wafer production at its Sherman, Texas facility. The reason? They believe AI will surge, driving up the need for optical interconnects.

Coherent’s Strategy

The supply chains must brace for this AI frenzy, and Coherent is on top of it. They operate eight wafer fabs across the nation, producing semiconductors for lasers and optical modules. Nvidia is counting on this initiative; back in March, they invested $2 billion to enhance Coherent’s production capacity. No time wasted there, right? In addition to Nvidia’s funding, Coherent secured $20 million from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund and the Sherman Economic Development Corporation, along with up to $50 million from the CHIPS and Science Act. The overarching goal? Invest $650 million into the Sherman facility, doubling its size and increasing InP wafer output fourfold.

Why Indium Phosphide? What’s the Buzz?

Why all this excitement about InP semiconductors? They are essential for lasers, photodetectors, and modulators in optical interconnects. As AI systems evolve from dozens of accelerators to potentially hundreds or thousands, copper simply falls short. Optics are now an essential component. Analysts speculate that this shift will significantly increase the number of optical components in AI systems in the coming years.

Employment and Future Outlook

Coherent’s expansion in Sherman is expected to create approximately a thousand new jobs, including around 550 in advanced manufacturing, engineering, and technical positions. There’s no indication yet of when the expansion will be completed. We’ve reached out for more details and will update you if they respond.

Nvidia’s Other Optical Partners

However, it’s not solely Coherent. Nvidia is investing broadly. Earlier this year, they committed $2 billion to Lumentum, a producer of various optical equipment for data centres – think transceivers, optical switches, and laser components. Not even a month later, Nvidia directed another $2 billion towards Marvell to enhance its silicon photonics capabilities.

Conclusion: When AI Meets Optics

Summarize and Embrace the Optics

So there it is! Nvidia is not holding back, pouring funds into optics as if there’s no tomorrow. With rising AI demands, they’re relying on optics to power the future. Will this strategy yield results? We’ll have to wait and find out, won’t we? Stay alert, friends!
