ON CALL, A La GadgetLad
Happy Friday once again! You know what that signifies – another round of tech support craziness from GadgetLad. Get ready for another delightful story contributed by a reader. This week, we introduce a beleaguered individual we’ll refer to as “Roy,” who found himself engulfed in the turmoil of tissue donations and organ transplants. “The on-call responsibilities were quite nerve-wracking given the high stakes,” Roy told us at GadgetLad. “Fortunately, things usually went smoothly and I didn’t receive too many after-hours calls.” One particularly frustrating call lingered in Roy’s mind, involving an annoyed lab employee who was unable to access her workstation. Classic, isn’t it?
Trouble at the Lab
Roy started with the routine checks: is the machine connected to the network; are the lights illuminated, etc. But the lab worker was preparing for a full-blown tantrum, so Roy reset her password. He then instructed her to choose a memorable one. Sounds simple, right? Not at all. The new password was still not working. So, Roy, the good guy he is, asked the lab worker to say the password aloud, hoping to figure it out on the company’s webmail system. The lab worker began to articulate: “Capital C, capital A, capital T,” and followed up with, “Capital Two.”
What’s a Capital Two?
Roy, with supreme patience and perhaps a pinch of sass, inquired, “What’s a capital Two?” “Did you mean the ‘@’ symbol?” The light finally went on, and moments later, Roy heard the sound of her typing away. “’OK, I got it,’ she remarked, and quickly hung up.” Ah, the charm of tech support.
