Well, that’s settled. If you were holding out for a OnePlus Open 2 this year, it’s time to let go of those aspirations and head home. OnePlus has officially stated that they won’t be launching a foldable in 2025, giving Samsung a chance to sit back and enjoy the moment.
In what can only be termed a rather candid (ha!) announcement, Product Manager Vale G. took to the OnePlus forums with a post entitled ‘A Note About Our Foldable Strategy for 2025 – Recalibrating for Innovation‘. Essentially, he remarked, “Yep, we’ve thought it over, and no, not this year.”
Pausing, Not Terminating
Now, before you start despairing into your drink, Vale mentioned that this isn’t OnePlus abandoning foldables permanently. His precise words were: “our decision to pause on foldable for this generation does not signify a departure from the category.” So, they will return… in due course.
It’s somewhat amusing, though, considering that in the very same week, Oppo – OnePlus’ not-so-secret sibling – unveiled their new foldable, the Oppo Find N5. This was the device many anticipated to establish the template for the Open 2.

Oppo’s sleek new foldable is set to launch on 20th February, but if you can’t wait to see it, check out our hands-on impressions. This is the closest we’ll get to an Open successor in 2025.
Reducing the Pressure
In his post, Vale couldn’t help but rave about how remarkable the Oppo Find N5 is, which only emphasizes that OnePlus and Oppo are essentially operating as one at this point. This development also means Samsung has a smoother path in 2025.
The OnePlus Open 2 would have been the ideal challenge for the upcoming Z Fold
Samsung’s latest Galaxy S25 series focused heavily on AI and software, with minimal changes to the hardware. Similar expectations surround their next foldable – the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
And in lucrative markets like the US, where Oppo doesn’t have a foothold, a OnePlus Open 2 could have compelled Samsung to make meaningful improvements to their Z Fold series. Now? Not likely. Samsung will continue to glide along, undisturbed.
The Future of OnePlus Foldables
With no OnePlus foldable on the horizon this year, what comes next? Assuming they don’t entirely abandon the concept, we’re looking at a potential return in 2026. That would be three years after the initial Open, and with competitors like Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, Honor, and even Vivo innovating, OnePlus will need to come back with considerable impact.
They might very well borrow Oppo’s next Find-series foldable, just as they intended to this year. Therefore, whatever the Oppo Find N6 ends up being, that’s likely your OnePlus Open 3.
Summary – “OnePlus Bails Out, Samsung Rejoices”
OnePlus isn’t launching a foldable this year, which means Samsung is laughing all the way to the bank. Instead, Oppo’s Find N5 is taking the lead, and OnePlus will probably just rebrand whatever Oppo produces the next time they decide to re-enter the market. If you were looking forward to an Open 2, bad luck – you might want to wait until 2026.
