Pixel HiLight is Undergoing a Transformation
The Pixel HiLight function on Google’s newest flagship devices is set to be enhanced with some eye-catching new functionalities.
The Launch of the Original Pixel HiLight
Google introduced the Pixel 11 series with an impressive new feature. HiLight, reserved for the Pro variants, is the notification light cleverly concealed within the camera flash on the rear of the device. Yet, upon release, it proved to be as useful as a chocolate teapot. It seems Google developed the hardware and then took a break, neglecting to consider its actual utility. As of now, it can only be used to notify you when a favorite contact is calling or during a conversation with Google Gemini. The encouraging news is that Google appears to be making strides to enhance HiLight’s functionality.

New Colors Coming Soon
Code discovered in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 hints at what’s on the horizon, unearthed by Android Authority. HiLight is set to expand its color options. Currently, it offers five colors, but four additional hues are on their way. At present, it showcases Teal, Yellow, Pink, Purple, and White, but soon you’ll impress your friends with Blue, Red, and two various shades of Green.
Upcoming Messaging Features
The Beta 5 code also suggests that Google is set to enhance the messaging features. When we had a brief glimpse of the Pixel 11 series ahead of its release, Google mentioned this, but this is the first concrete indication that it’s happening. However, which messaging apps it will support remains uncertain. If it’s limited to Google Messages, I’ll be as happy as a cat in a sunbeam. Considering the current calling functionality works with WhatsApp, maybe messaging will follow suit. Just don’t hold your breath, as this software is still in beta, meaning it won’t be available on Pixel phones like a standard firmware update until later this year – possibly in December, aligned with a Pixel Drop.
In Summary – Stay Calm and Keep Enjoying Your Notifications
Google is finally paying some attention to the Pixel HiLight feature, and it’s about time! New colors, potential messaging integration, and a promise of more excitement ahead. If only they had put in this level of effort from the start, right? Stay tuned for more updates—I’ll keep watching so you don’t have to.
