ICO Takes Action Against Dishonest Company
“Am I sure about the dataset? As long as I’m handling the cases, I honestly don’t care if it’s outdated, as long as it’s profitable.” What a remark! This delightful nugget was included in a communication from the head of KRA Consultancy Ltd, the entity that faced a penalty for bothering financially-strapped individuals with illegal texts – among them those irritating fake bailiff notices.
The Man Behind The Operation
Khuram Rezvan Ahmad, the director of KRA, appeared to be more focused on fattening his wallet than ensuring that the “loan rejection data was correct” or that individuals had consented to receive these promotional communications. The GadgetLad reports they’ve been slapped with a £300,000 penalty for targeting individuals who were already in distress; not exactly admirable behavior, is it?
The Frightening Messages
According to the ICO, KRA was all about dispatching phony bailiff threats to frighten people into engaging with the company’s so-called debt relief services. Sent with the sender ID “DEMAND,” the messages had recipients believing bailiffs were knocking at their door, ready to seize their television.
Staying Under The Radar
The tech-savvy Ahmad didn’t want to be caught red-handed, so he allegedly contacted a telecommunications provider in China to keep those annoying messages hidden. But that didn’t prevent the regulatory body from uncovering them. Between April 2022 and May 2025, they inundated the unwitting with an astounding 5,575,715 unsolicited messages. Indeed, that’s a mountain of spam!
Numerous Complaints
Over 60,000 individuals voiced their grievances to the ICO and Mobile UK’s 7726 spam-reporting service. It turns out, KRA was also avoiding registration with the Financial Conduct Authority – not exactly a pristine operation.
The Coaching Dilemma
In some rather shady WhatsApp messages unearthed by the ICO, Ahmad employed the term “coaching” as a euphemism for their intimidating tactics. “Get through as much as and pitch whatever. Don’t worry about pushing anything back because the coaching will handle that tomorrow morning.” Quite the smooth talker, isn’t he?
The Aftermath
Even after the ICO raided KRA’s premises and Ahmad’s residence, the audacious individuals continued their misleading marketing practices, accumulating 161 new complaints. Andy Curry, head of investigations at the ICO, had a few pointed remarks: “Individuals in economic trouble deserve assistance, not exploitation…” Indeed, preach it, Andy!
Financial Penalty And Enforcement Order
The ICO didn’t stop at the £300,000 fine; they also issued an Enforcement Notice, imposing a strict 30-day deadline on KRA to cease sending those troublesome marketing messages without appropriate consent. They got what they deserved, the opportunists.
Summary: A Truly Questionable Conduct
Who would have believed that terrifying people with fake bailiff threats would result in a hefty fine? Lesson learned, KRA! Guys and gals, if you’re inundated with spam, don’t hesitate to report it. The GadgetLad is on your side!
