Greetings from GadgetLad’s On Call
Another week brings a new episode of On Call, GadgetLad’s fiery Friday series where readers share their outrageous tech support experiences. This time, we have a contributor we’ve dubbed “Steve,” who began his IT career providing tech support for a supermarket’s own-brand mobile service.
When Batteries Aren’t Simply for Tossing
Steve’s Initiation into Tech Support
Steve kicked things off in 2006, back when mobiles still featured those detachable batteries people used to swipe for their TV remote controls. “One day, a customer was on the line, ranting about her new mobile. She had used it for a week or so, and now she wanted to return it because it was broken,” Steve recounted to GadgetLad.
The Mystery of the Disappearing Batteries
Being the inquisitive type, Steve probed about the phone’s issue. “This phone’s supposed to last for ages,” she exclaimed. “But I’ve just paid for a third battery to keep it running.” It turned out that whenever this woman’s phone died, she would toss the battery and grab a new one. She thought they were as expendable as packs of cigarettes.
Chargers: The Craft of Not Being Pointless
Steve’s Detective Skills
Steve, with all his knowledge, inquired whether she was using the charger that came with the phone. The poor lady didn’t even realize it was there, bless her heart, much less utilize it. “I instructed her to retrieve the box the phone arrived in and take a look,” Steve shared with GadgetLad. She quickly discovered the charger, hidden beneath a piece of cardboard, and was left with a sense of realization.
