The Penguin: Shady Spin-Off or Authentic Gritty Delight?
Skip the Typical Spin-off Nonsense
Alright, so superhero television spin-offs often leave us feeling as let down as when you realize you’re out of coffee. They rarely match the brilliance of the original films. But, “The Penguin”? No way, this one hits the nail on the head. It’s as if they took the dark, gritty realm of *The Batman* and pushed it to the max. We’re talking about filthy streets, dirt, and a Gotham that’s so crime-infested it feels like you can actually feel the drizzle on your skin.
Oswald Cobb, Not Cobblepot… Yeah, You Read That Right
First off, it’s Oswald Cobb, not Cobblepot, as is typically the case in the comics. In *The Batman*, he served as a bit of comic relief, didn’t he? Skidding around like a true rogue during that Batmobile chase. But now? Oh no, he’s after power – and he’ll do whatever it takes to seize it. Crime has absolutely spiraled in Gotham since The Riddler stirred things up, and you can bank on Penguin to swoop in and exploit the mayhem to his advantage.

Colin Farrell: From Humor to Cold-Blooded
Colin Farrell’s a bloody genius in this role. He shifts from leaving you in stitches with his quips to making you ponder, “Am I a horrible person for still rooting for him after that?!”. He commits these atrocious acts, then – bam – he delivers another zinger and you’re chuckling away again. You’ll be torn between cheering him on or loathing him. True *Breaking Bad* energy, you know?
Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oswald is a masterclass
Mum’s the Word
Even with all his gangster mayhem, there’s a tender side to Oz for one person: his mum, Francis Cobb. Played by Deirdre O’Connell, she’s both absolutely frightening and heartbreakingly fragile. She also suffers from some grim health issues, pushing Oz to engage in even shadier dealings to keep her safe and secure. If you thought *Walter White cared for his family*, just wait.
A New Robin? Kind of…
Introducing Victor Aguilar. Rhenzy Feliz absolutely crushes it as a young lad caught attempting to swipe some hubcaps. Picture him as a distorted Robin to Oz’s Batman. Only instead of schooling him in the honorable ways of crime-fighting, Oz drags him further into Gotham’s sinister shadows. It’s a true coming-of-age catastrophe, one that’s sure to elevate this young kid’s career.

Sofia Falcone: Eerie, and I Mean Really Eerie
Then there’s Sofia Falcone, portrayed by Cristin Milioti, the offspring of Carmine Falcone (yep, the major mob leader from *The Batman*). She doesn’t need to shout commands – her gaze speaks volumes. You can tell she’s not to be messed with when she enters a scene. She’s as subtle as a hammer, yet way more chilling. Fantastic stuff.

Superb Visuals—Like a Cinematic Experience
No lackluster CGI here, people – HBO didn’t cut corners on the special effects budget. If you thought you were getting subpar television visuals, rethink that. From the explosions to the gunfights, it matches the quality of your favorite big-screen films. And don’t even get me started on the penguin prosthetics on Farrell – top-notch craftsmanship there. Mike Marino and his makeup team deserve a drink!
At Last, Some Real Violence and Swearing
One of the big complaints about *The Batman* was its PG-13/15 rating. Well, no worries – *The Penguin* cranks up the swearing and gore to appropriate levels. A few scenes left me peeking through my fingers like a total softie! If you’re after something grittier, this here’s what you need.
But Where’s Batman in All This?
Now, my one cheeky complaint: where on earth is Bruce Wayne amidst this chaos? Gotham’s falling apart, and the Bat’s nowhere to be seen. I’m sure they’ll explain it in the next installment, but come on, Bats – it’s your city too! Get it together, mate. Aside from that, this series will keep you hooked all the way through.
The Penguin premieres on HBO and Max in the US on Thursday, 19th September 2024, and on Sky and Now in the UK on Friday, 20th September 2024. New episodes will be released weekly, so pace yourself.
Summary: The Penguin – It’s Intense, Mate!
Let’s just say, if you’re into ruthless mobsters, authentic swearing, and some of the finest television performances of 2024, *The Penguin* is gonna be your new favorite. Oz is reckless, violent, and completely unpredictable – and you won’t want to miss a single moment. HBO’s hit another home run!
