Google’s Pixel Phones Facing Criticism

The Google Pixel lineup has been encountering criticism recently. The Android 17 rollout has turned into a real mess with connectivity issues, touchscreen glitches, and even devices becoming pricey paperweights. Not upgraded yet? You’re fortunate, but there are still problems like missing call notifications and erratic speakers.

Moreover, rumors about an increase in prices for the Pixel 11 series are not aiding the situation. It’s not the complete story, but that’s the info circulating.

Exploring Reddit

In search of some reassurance, I found myself browsing through the Google Pixel subreddit on Reddit. Renowned for its straightforward views, a thread about people’s most loved “hidden features” drew my attention. Some users swear by these features for enhancing their experiences.

So, which features are genuinely worth checking out, and which are mere hype? After experimenting with the last three Pixel flagship models, I bring you the top 10 features as validated on the Pixel 10 Pro XL.

1. Live Weather

Who would have thought you could make your home screen reflect the actual weather outside? By using a custom wallpaper, you can configure it to align with current weather conditions or even just for fun.

It looks fantastic for a few seconds when unlocking your phone, then reverts back to normal. Probably a battery-saving mechanism, but it seems a bit gimmicky.

Verdict: Not worth the effort

2. Clipboard in Gboard

This is a feature I’ve been utilizing, and it’s not limited to Pixel. The Clipboard in Gboard remembers everything you’ve copied for later use. It’s a huge time-saver.

Not entirely hidden, since the icon is readily available on Gboard, yet it’s still an excellent feature.

Verdict: Not hidden or Pixel-exclusive, but an outstanding feature

3. Call Screen

Call Screen significantly helps in avoiding annoying spam calls. You can screen unknown numbers using an AI voice that asks for their identity. It’s just that simple.

Not exclusive to Pixel, but still an invaluable tool. In the UK, it requires manual activation, unlike in the US where it’s more streamlined.

Verdict: Again, not hidden or exclusive to Pixel, but definitely useful

4. Quick Phrases

Quick Phrases allow for answering calls or silencing timers hands-free. A real boon when you’re occupied with cooking or similar tasks.

Once configured, it works brilliantly. Samsung has a similar version, but the Pixel implementation is ideal for convenience.

Verdict: Not exclusive to Pixel, but a fantastic feature

5. Flip to Shh

Turning your phone face down activates Do Not Disturb mode. A clever trick for some tranquility when you need it.

It may be a bit concealed, but once you remember it, it’s perfect for meetings, movies, or focusing on a project.

Verdict: Hidden, exclusive to Pixel, and incredibly beneficial. Hooray!

6. Now Playing

Not truly hidden, but Now Playing automatically identifies songs playing in the background, even when offline. It’s always been a favorite of mine.

A fantastic feature when it functions, though it doesn’t always identify every track.

Verdict: Not necessarily hidden, but a stellar Pixel-exclusive feature

7. Quick Tap

Quick Tap feels magical; a double tap on the back of your device can perform multiple actions. An impressive discovery!

You’ll need to get accustomed to the tapping area, and it may not work well with cases, but once you nail it, it’s transformative.

Verdict: Not exclusive to Pixel, but both concealed and very beneficial

8. Overview Select

Having trouble with copying text? Overview Select bypasses pesky apps letting you copy the text you actually need.

This gem is hidden, and once you integrate it into your routine, you won’t want to go back.

Verdict: Pixel-exclusive, hidden (at least to me) and extremely beneficial

9. Take a Message

Tired of wrestling with voicemail? Take a Message transcribes your messages directly on your device, saving both time and effort.

Still exclusive to Pixel, and a handy feature at that.

Verdict: Not hidden, but an outstanding Pixel-exclusive feature

10. Direct My Call

Frustrated with lengthy phone menus when contacting businesses? Direct My Call is intended to help streamline the process, but it faltered during my attempt.

The transcription quality wasn’t great, and I ended up missing some options. Not a feature I plan to use frequently.

Verdict: Not reliable enough for practical use

Pixel: More Than Meets the Eye

If you only paid attention to Reddit, you’d believe Pixels are no good. However, the Pixel 10 Pro XL is an exceptional device, and the forthcoming Pixel 11 series has the potential to surpass it.

They’re not flawless, but Google is hitting many marks right with these devices, packed with functionalities you won’t encounter elsewhere.

Summary: “Pixel Positivity Amidst the Pessimism”

Despite the complaints, there’s a lot to appreciate in the Pixel realm. It may just surprise you if you give it a chance.
