“How to Start?” – A Right Sticky Situation
To launch your week with some flair, GadgetLad believes a new story about tech blunders fits the bill. Today, we’ve got a gem from a reader we’ll refer to as “Martin” who recounted a brilliant experience from his initial foray into tech.
“I had just begun working as a network engineer for a proper small IT company. Being the sole individual who’d tinkered with Cisco equipment, they labeled me ‘The Cisco expert’,” Martin recounted to GadgetLad. That nickname landed Martin a trip to a client requiring a snazzy new switch for a Nortel network – not the Cisco kit he was only partially familiar with.
A Brew and VLANs
Martin arrived to a hearty reception from the client’s IT crew, a nice cup of tea, and some enjoyable exchanges about VLANs. Feeling pleased, he got to work. “I finished rack and stack, basic default setup, and the VLANs we chatted about over the drink,” he revealed. He connected everything, ran a test, and was all set to skedaddle.
Uh Oh, 4,000 Sessions Down!
Just as Martin was packing up, the phone rang. “I sensed a disturbance in the force,” he chuckled. The IT team were on the line, inquiring if he’d made a blunder, as over 4,000 AS/400 sessions had just crashed.
“There was a clear cause-and-effect link between the moment I hooked up the switch and the sessions dropping,” he confessed. The only way to restore order was for the IT team to terminate them manually, one by one. Martin watched as they toiled for an hour rectifying his blunder.
Spanning-Tree Miscalculation
It turned out the new switch’s spanning-tree configurations were to blame. AS/400 had its connections from the hosts to the mainframe using SNA over TCP/IP emulation, and if a packet was lost… it was game over.
Martin stated he was appalled. “Those IT guys had been really great to me, and I’d caused them quite a headache,” he wrote. In retrospect, he believes his managers were the real foolish ones for tagging him ‘The Expert’ and letting a novice take on such a significant task.
“Someone must’ve caught on, as I didn’t get the sack,” he noted. “But I picked up some brilliant lessons that day!”

Martin’s story is a classic that encapsulates the challenges of being thrown into the deep end. Remember, even if you’re labeled ‘The Expert’, it might just be a stylish way of saying ‘Good luck, pal!’
