Superman, the inaugural film in the revitalized DC cinematic universe, is brimming with dynamic characters. Nevertheless, there’s no question that Guy Gardner has left one of the most significant marks, bowl-cut and all.
Played by Nathan Fillion, Guy is among various iterations of the Green Lantern – a superhero donned in a green suit, wielding a mystical ring. This brash and wisecracking Gardner vastly differs from the prior version depicted by Ryan Reynolds in the notorious 2011 film.
But who precisely is Guy Gardner, and how did he acquire his powers? Here is everything you need to understand about the superhero with the emerald ring.

Who is Guy Gardner in DC Comics?
The character Guy Gardner was devised by comic book scribe John Broome and artist Gil Kane in 1968. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that this version of Green Lantern received his iconic traits. The creative team of Steve Englehart and Joe Staton transformed Guy into a caricature of a boastful ultra-masculine American, drawing inspiration from Major Ronald Merrick from the television series The Jewel in the Crown.
In the comics, Guy hails from Baltimore, where he was raised in a dysfunctional household. His abusive alcoholic father is the source of many traumas that significantly influenced his character.
Despite his rebellious teenage years, Guy ultimately managed to turn his life around. He began playing football and earned a degree in psychology and education from the University of Michigan. After completing college, he worked as a social welfare caseworker before transitioning into teaching.
At one juncture, it was disclosed that Guy is, in fact, part alien. It was revealed that generations earlier, one of his ancestors had an encounter with a Vuldarian – a member of an alien warrior species.
How did Guy Gardner become the Green Lantern?
Green Lantern’s powers derive from alien artifacts – a ring energized by a unique lantern. These items were created by The Guardians of the Universe from the planet Maltus. As a scientific race, they conducted numerous experiments, one resulting in the formation of the Multiverse.
The Guardians also established the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping organization. Thousands of individuals within these ranks, dispersed across the galaxy, are referred to as the Green Lanterns. Should one of these superheroes perish, their ring seeks out a worthy successor.
When the fatally injured Green Lantern Abin Sur crash-landed on Earth, his rings identified two potential human heirs: Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. Ultimately, Hal, being closer to the crash site, was chosen as the new Green Lantern, while Guy was deemed a secondary superhero. The two forged a friendship, and Gardner joined Jordan in numerous escapades.
However, at one point, Hal’s lantern detonated, sending Guy into the Phantom Zone – a dimensional prison utilized by Kryptonians. After some time, he managed to escape but sustained brain damage and fell into a coma. Upon recovery, Guy’s demeanor evolved, becoming more abrasive and erratic.

What’s the deal with Guy Gardner’s distinctive haircut?
Guy’s bowl haircut was inspired by the comics he enjoyed as a youth featuring General Glory and his companion Ernie, The Battling Boy. In the DC universe, General Glory is an overtly patriotic parody of Captain America, while his aide bears similarities to Bucky Barnes.
What are Guy Gardner’s superpowers?
In the comics, Guy’s abilities come from a green ring, whose power is proportional to the owner’s will. Nevertheless, as his journey unfolds, he engages with other rings of power – yellow, red, purple, and blue – which bestow him different capabilities.
As the Green Lantern, Guy Gardner possesses the ability to fly, absorb and emit energy, alongside superhuman strength, speed, agility, and resilience. When injured, he can regenerate.
Upon discovering his extraterrestrial lineage, Guy unlocked further abilities, including transforming parts of his body into weaponry and undergoing bio-molecular metamorphosis to change his physical form.
Will Guy Gardner be featured in any forthcoming DC films or series?
Indeed! Soon, Guy is set to appear in the second season of Peacemaker, and we eagerly anticipate his interaction with the talkative Christopher Smith.
James Gunn has also confirmed that Guy Gardner will reappear in the DC series, Lanterns, which focuses on various incarnations of the Green Lantern.
This implies that his origin and backstory might differ somewhat from the source material mentioned earlier – we’ll learn more when these shows debut.
