Apple’s Hidden Fitness Tracker Antics

After the triumph of screenless fitness devices such as the Fitbit Air and the Whoop Strap, it appears that Apple is now trying its hand at the same venture.

We’ve previously mentioned that Apple has intentions for this type of fitness tracker, but now, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, they are in the process of developing prototypes of it.

Will It Ever Be Released?

A product reaching this phase doesn’t ensure its eventual release (recall the ill-fated Apple Car debacle?). If it does succeed, don’t expect it to arrive before 2028. Still, it’s amusing to imagine what a screenless Apple device might appear like.

The Emergence of Software-Centric Devices

The Fitbit Air and the more recent Garmin Cirqa have demonstrated that people are receptive to devices free from distractions, with the market shifting toward a software-centric strategy.

Samsung vs. Apple: The Feature Battle

The recent Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 and the Apple Watch Series 12 aren’t particularly overflowing with new features, but their software capabilities have strengthened in the fitness tracking arena, incorporating Whoop-style metrics such as Fitness Index and Daily Cardio Load.

Possible Enhancements and Obstacles for Apple

Apple recently provided a significant update to the native Health app to ensure compatibility with the Watch Series 12’s new advanced sensors. However, the Apple Fitness app could benefit from an update since it has not evolved much over time. Tying a redesign to the launch of a screenless tracker, which would rely heavily on the app, seems logical.

Where Will Apple’s Tracker Be Positioned?

If Apple’s fitness tracker does become available, it will be interesting to see how it compares to existing Apple wearables. The Apple Watch SE 3 already provides good value at £219/$249, so this tracker will need to be priced lower to not compete with it.

Alternatively, if Apple promotes it as a companion to the Apple Watch (similar to the Whoop Strap), it might carry a higher price tag or could potentially be included in a subscription model.

What Lies Ahead for Apple?

We’ll be keeping a close watch on any rumors surrounding Apple’s screenless tracker ambitions. Regarding other Apple devices, one that may not come to fruition is a speculated AI-driven pendant with an integrated camera. It’s unclear why that idea is on hold, but it brings to mind the failed Humane AI Pin, which was all concept with no execution.

Summary: Anticipating Apple’s Invisible Marvel!

Hang tight everyone; it may take some time before Apple’s screenless tracker, their venture to rival the Fitbit Air, hits the shelves. Whether it will be worth the wait or just another piece of vaporware adorned with a fruit logo, only time will reveal. In the meantime, we’ll continue to lift weights and pamper our Jack Russells.
