Doctorow’s Perspective on AI Doubt
Cory Doctorow, a prominent figure in technology discourse and a proponent of the concept “enshittification,” presented a compelling case on Wednesday regarding Trump’s interference in the US-led global framework and whether other nations genuinely require control over their AI trajectories. Doctorow has a history of skepticism towards AI, and this is evident in his latest book, The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Life After AI – symbolizing humans being directed by a foolish horse’s head (AI). In his recent article, he dismissed the notion of a sovereign AI as “nonsense.”
Initiation of the Dialogue
The discussion began with a contribution from Australian author John Quiggin, who expressed concern over how the US president is dismantling the foundational strengths built over the past century – including diplomatic, military, financial, and technological aspects. Quiggin warns that America’s AI supremacy poses risks for other nations, which are understandably reluctant to rely on an erratic and capricious US. He expressed skepticism about the extravagant investments in leading laboratories, quipping, “My hopeful perspective is that this race will be claimed by low-energy tortoises rather than hyperactive hares. Second movers like Deepseek and the newer French Mistral, advancing perhaps a year behind US frontrunners, can miraculously emulate their skills at a fraction of the price, without dependence on colossal data centers.”
Doctorow’s Viewpoint
Doctorow argues that the discussion is only significant if one considers AI to be important. Clearly, he does not. He observes that if Trump were to abruptly disable all the AI chatbots utilized by other countries, it likely wouldn’t significantly impact their operations. However, if he instructed Microsoft to terminate Office 365 or directed John Deere to render its tractors inoperative, that would induce an immediate, noticeable economic effect. He remarked: “In the face of these tangible, non-speculative, urgent, serious risks, concentrating on AI – the most financially detrimental technology in history, which has repeatedly failed to deliver on the promises made by its proponents – is simply misguided … The genuine digital challenge is developing applications and data centers to sustain routine administrative, telecoms, and e-commerce software, and subsequently migrating your country’s, ministries’, businesses’, and households’ data to these new platforms.” A resounding endorsement of that sentiment.
Ongoing AI Significance Conversation
AI may play a role in the future – it’s undeniably a trending topic, yet there lies an immediate threat. U.S. tech companies have demonstrated a willingness to stay silent regarding the president or US government until it becomes strategically beneficial to speak out. The same narrative persists. Europe ought to prioritize investing in alternatives wherever feasible.
