If you’re on the lookout for something a bit unique to enjoy this Halloween, **The Substance** by Coralie Fargeat will definitely do the trick. Ditch the typical ghost stories or some nutter with an axe – this one dives into body horror, reminiscent of David Cronenberg’s bizarre films. So, brace yourself for ample horrific violence, body transformations, and general grossness that will give you chills.
The story revolves around Elisabeth Sparkle (yes, portrayed by Demi Moore), a faded Hollywood actress who gets kicked off her fitness television program. Eager to hold onto her stardom, she opts for a bizarre rejuvenation therapy. Sure, it seems fantastic at the start… But surprise – it brings along some dark repercussions. Classic, right?
**The Substance** even snagged Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, so it’s not just a generic movie with cheap shocks. It’s definitely worth watching at the theater first if you can. If you’re itching for a repeat watch, here’s all the info on when **The Substance** will appear on your television.

When Could **The Substance** Be Released On Streaming Services?
For those of us who prefer to binge-watch at home, you might be in for a bit of a wait. Mubi, the distributor for **The Substance**, will likely add it to their streaming service eventually. They focus on arthouse and indie films, so don’t expect a speedy, Netflix-style release.
Typically, most films from Mubi appear on their platform about 6 weeks post-cinema run. That’s how it went for films like **Holy Spider** and **Fallen Leaves**. But there are always some outliers, so don’t go wagering your house on it.
Since **The Substance** is set to hit theaters in the US and UK on September 20, 2024, I’d wager it’ll be available for streaming around early November. But don’t get mad at me if I miss the mark – we haven’t received official confirmation from Mubi yet, so this is just an educated guess.
How To Watch **The Substance** On VOD
If you’re interested in going the VOD route – that’s renting or buying it online for those who may not know – we’re still a bit in the dark here. There’s no confirmed release date for when **The Substance** will be available to rent or buy digitally in the UK or US.
That said, in the States, Amazon Prime Video is already taunting us with a pre-order page. So you can fork out cash on [Amazon Prime Video US](https://www.amazon.com/Substance-Coralie-Fargeat/dp/B0DGQVXDLV) if you’re bold enough to pre-order without a definite date. Some believe VOD access might happen around **October 29, 2024**, but again, we’re awaiting confirmation from Mubi.
When Will **The Substance** Be Released On DVD/Blu-ray?
If you’re truly old school and desire a physical copy for your dusty DVD collection, the information is a bit clearer here. On [Amazon UK](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Substance-Blu-ray-Demi-Moore/dp/B0DHH1B1MG), they’re indicating that the DVD and Blu-ray release is scheduled for **July 1, 2025**. A bit of a wait, but you can pre-order it now if you’re that enthusiastic.
As usual, that date hasn’t been officially confirmed by Mubi yet, so I wouldn’t count on it just yet.

### “Body Horrors & Blu-ray Delays: Welcome to 2025, Mate!”
In summary, **The Substance** is currently showing in cinemas, but if you want to stream, rent, or buy it at home, you’ll need to be patient. Mubi’s likely dragging its feet given the film’s success in theaters. Streaming might be possible by November, and VOD could arrive by the end of October, but we won’t know for sure until Mubi gives us the signal. If you’re waiting for a Blu-ray or DVD, expect to wait until July 2025 unless someone gives Mubi a calendar.
But hey, while you’re waiting, there’s loads of other crazy content out there – just steer clear of any rejuvenation treatments, alright?
